Pianist Peter Serkin, clarinetist Richard Stoltzman, violinist Ida Kavafian and cellist Fred Sherry founded Tashi in 1973 and the group's landmark recording of Messiaen Quartet for the End of Time was released in 1976.

The musicians developed a close relationship with Toru Takemitsu.

In 1975, the New York Times reported:
"The easy informality of the members of Tashi—Fred Sherry dressed in a sports shirt and sweater, Peter Serkin wandering through the hail greeting friends before the concert, and so on—is balanced by a fierce emotional commitment to the music they play. Not surprisingly, this fusion was reflected in the audience they attracted to Carnegie Hall on Monday night: predominantly young, raptly attentive and enthusiastic..."
